A major explosion at the Valero Port Arthur Refinery on Monday led authorities in Port Arthur to issue an emergency shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.
City officials said the advisory was issued “to ensure the safety of all residents” in affected areas, including Sabine Pass, Pleasure Island, and regions south of Highway 73 extending west from Stirlwell Boulevard.
Blast followed by fire
According to reports cited by Reuters, the explosion occurred late Monday at the refinery, which has a processing capacity of around 380,000 barrels per day. The blast was followed by a fire at the facility.
Local officials indicated that the incident may have been linked to an industrial heater, though the exact cause has not yet been confirmed.
No injuries reported so far

Emergency services remain on high alert as authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess any potential risks to nearby communities.
