A 45-year-old woman employed as a domestic worker was allegedly murdered by a dermatologist in South Delhi’s Greater Kailash area, triggering outrage among local residents and domestic workers in the neighbourhood.
The victim, identified as Meena, was found dead in a pool of blood on the terrace of a residential building on Thursday morning. Police arrested the accused, identified as Dr. Manish Gupta, from the scene itself. According to investigators, the doctor allegedly attacked the woman with a cricket bat before stabbing her multiple times.
Police said they received a PCR call around 11.30 am informing them that a woman was lying blood-soaked on the terrace of a nearby building. A team immediately rushed to the spot and found Meena dead. The accused was reportedly present near the body when officers arrived and was taken into custody without resistance.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari stated that the accused, a dermatologist by profession, had employed Meena as a domestic worker for several years. During preliminary questioning, he allegedly admitted to the assault. However, the exact motive behind the crime remains unclear.
Investigators are exploring multiple angles, including the possibility of a personal dispute. Police have ruled out speculation regarding black magic or occult practices, stating that no evidence supporting such claims has emerged so far.
A forensic team examined the crime scene, while investigators reviewed CCTV footage from surrounding buildings and questioned residents. The bat and knife allegedly used in the attack have been recovered, and the victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
The incident has left the victim’s family devastated. Robin, Meena’s son, said he was shocked to learn about his mother’s death. According to him, she had been working at the doctor’s residence for nearly 15 years and had left home for work as usual on the day of the incident.
Friends and colleagues described Meena as a familiar and respected figure among domestic workers in the area. One of her former co-workers said she had worked alongside Meena for several years at the accused’s residence and found the allegations difficult to comprehend.
As news of the killing spread, a large crowd gathered outside the building, demanding strict punishment for the accused. Emotional scenes unfolded as many domestic workers and local residents expressed grief and anger over the murder. Police personnel were deployed in the area to maintain order and prevent tensions from escalating.
The crime has renewed concerns about safety in South Delhi’s affluent neighbourhoods, particularly because it comes just two months after the rape and murder of a 22-year-old UPSC aspirant and daughter of a senior IRS officer in the nearby Kailash Hills area. In that case, a former domestic worker was arrested for the crime.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and efforts are being made to establish the precise sequence of events, determine the motive, and ascertain whether any other individuals were involved.
