MUMBAI: A 24-year-old dentistry graduate from Antop Hill died by suicide, leaving behind a six-page note that led to the arrest of her former boyfriend on Tuesday.
Police identified the accused as Fuzail Ahmed Khan (34), an insurance broker. He has been arrested on charges of abetment to suicide and was produced before a local court, which remanded him to one day of police custody.
According to police, the suicide note alleged that Khan frequently insulted and humiliated the woman during their relationship.
Authorities clarified that there was no communal angle to the case and described it as the result of a failed relationship.
The note also mentioned that the woman’s friends were aware of her problems with Khan and sometimes joked, saying, “We don’t want to see you in the fridge,” an apparent reference to a recent Delhi murder case in which a woman’s body parts were allegedly stored in a refrigerator.
The deceased lived with her parents and sister in Rawali Camp, Antop Hill. She was pursuing a Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) degree from a dental college in Navi Mumbai while also working part-time at BYL Nair Hospital.
Her father, a retired man, filed a complaint at Antop Hill police station after discovering the suicide note in her bedroom.
According to his statement, the woman went to her room around 7 pm on Sunday evening and did not come out despite repeated calls from the family for dinner. The next morning, when she did not open the door, the family forced it open and found her hanging from a white nylon rope.
She was taken to Sion Hospital, where doctors declared her dead before admission at 11:18 am.
Police initially registered an accidental death report (ADR). During the spot panchnama, officers recovered six handwritten pages believed to be the victim’s suicide note. After verification, the handwriting was confirmed to be hers.
Based on her father’s complaint, police later registered a case of abetment to suicide against Khan.
In the note, the woman wrote that she met Khan on a dating app, and the two were in a relationship for about one and a half years. She alleged that his repeated insults and humiliating behaviour caused her severe mental trauma.
Police said the couple eventually realised their relationship would not last and decided to end it while remaining friends.
Investigators also found that another man had entered the woman’s life, which reportedly angered Khan and led to a confrontation between them.
During the altercation, Khan allegedly used derogatory language, which police say deeply affected the woman and was mentioned in her suicide note.
