NEW DELHI: A 49-year-old assistant professor at the University of Delhi was found murdered inside her apartment in east Delhi’s Vasundhara Enclave on Thursday, prompting a major police investigation.
The victim, identified as Debosmita Paul, was a faculty member at Shivaji College and lived alone in the flat, police said.
Sister Discovers Body After Repeated Calls Go Unanswered
According to police, the incident came to light after the victim’s sister, Devarati Paul, became concerned when Debosmita failed to answer repeated phone calls throughout the morning.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Rajeev Kumar said a PCR call was received around 2.35 pm reporting the discovery.
When Devarati reached the apartment, she found it locked from the outside. Suspecting something was wrong, she broke open the lock and entered the flat, where she found her sister dead and immediately alerted police.
Forensic Teams Examine Crime Scene
Police personnel, along with forensic experts and crime scene investigators, reached the apartment soon after receiving the call.
Officials conducted a detailed examination of the premises and collected forensic evidence. The scene was documented through photographs and videography as part of the investigation.
Authorities have not yet disclosed specific details about the condition of the body or any evidence recovered from the apartment.
Post-Mortem to Determine Cause of Death
The body has been sent to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Police said the exact cause of death will be established after the autopsy report is received.
Investigators are expected to rely on forensic findings to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify possible suspects.
Murder Case Registered
A case of murder has been registered under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at New Ashok Nagar Police Station.
Police have formed multiple teams to investigate the crime and track down those responsible.
CCTV Footage and Recent Contacts Under Scanner
As part of the probe, investigators are examining CCTV footage from the area, analysing the victim’s recent movements, and reviewing her phone records and personal contacts.
Police are also exploring other potential leads to establish the motive behind the murder and reconstruct the events leading up to her death.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have said further details will emerge as evidence is analysed and witness statements are recorded.
