New Delhi: Security has been intensified across the national capital ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations on August 15, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to address the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
Delhi Police and other security forces have increased surveillance and deployed additional personnel at strategic locations. Security checks have also been stepped up at entry and exit points across the city, while public places are being closely monitored amid expectations of large crowds.
The security measures were put in place ahead of the Independence Day celebrations and the Prime Minister’s address at the Red Fort.
Parking near Red Fort digitally mapped
In a move aimed at improving traffic management, the Delhi Traffic Police has digitally mapped seven designated parking locations near the Red Fort in collaboration with Google Maps and Mappls.
The Mappls app will provide QR codes for the parking sites, allowing visitors and dignitaries to locate their designated parking areas more easily.
Security strengthened in Gurugram and Faridabad
Gurugram Police have deployed around 4,500 personnel and established 11 major checkpoints across the district. Quick Reaction Teams have been stationed at important locations, while VIP routes, venues, parking areas and entry and exit points are being closely monitored.
Hotels, restaurants, malls, clubs and other public establishments will also undergo special checks. Security measures include metal-detector screening, rooftop surveillance and anti-sabotage checks.
Faridabad Police have similarly established 11 interstate checkpoints to screen suspicious vehicles and individuals.
Delhi Metro to start services at 4 am
The Delhi Metro will begin operations at 4 am on August 15 to facilitate travel for guests, invitees and members of the public attending the celebrations at the Red Fort.
Metro trains will initially operate at 30-minute intervals until regular services begin. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has also provided 1.30 lakh special QR tickets to the Ministry of Defence for invited guests and other authorised attendees.
People travelling to the Red Fort by Metro can use Lal Quila, Jama Masjid or Delhi Gate stations, which are among the nearest stations to the venue.
With heightened security, extensive traffic arrangements and early Metro services, authorities are preparing to manage the large crowds expected during the Independence Day celebrations.
