Delhi’s civic bodies have initiated the process to recommend a three-year extension of the Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act, which protects unauthorised constructions built before June 2014 from punitive action. The Act is currently set to expire on December 31, 2026.

The move comes amid concerns over building collapses and the slow response to the PM-UDAY regularisation scheme. Only 137 applications have been received, with 22 approved, for regularisation of properties in 1,511 eligible unauthorised colonies.

The revenue department has extended the PM-UDAY application deadline from October 31 to January 31, 2027. Officials said despite reduced fees and simplified application procedures, uptake remains low.

Experts have raised concerns that continued protection and regularisation of vulnerable structures could pose safety risks, particularly as many buildings do not comply with building regulations.
