NOIDA: A head constable of the Delhi Police has been arrested after his girlfriend allegedly shot herself with his service pistol at a flat in Greater Noida West on Thursday night. The 34-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries late on Friday, following an argument triggered by a phone call from the constable’s wife.
Police said they were alerted by hospital authorities in Noida, where the injured woman had been taken for treatment. A team from the local police station rushed to the hospital and identified the victim as a resident of a housing society in Greater Noida West.
During preliminary inquiries, officers found that the woman had been brought to the hospital by her partner, later identified as Ashish Pawar. Using technical surveillance, police traced and detained him for questioning.
According to officials, Pawar disclosed that he was posted as a head constable in Delhi Police and was married, though he had applied for divorce. He said he had been in a relationship with the woman for nearly five years, and the couple had been living together for the past three months.
Investigators said the incident followed a gathering at a friend’s house in Greater Noida West on Thursday evening. Four people, including Pawar and his girlfriend, attended the party and consumed alcohol. Police later recovered liquor bottles from the spot, and statements were recorded from the other two attendees.
The situation reportedly escalated after Pawar received a call from his wife during the gathering. His girlfriend became upset, leading to an argument. She later returned to her flat and allegedly shot herself with Pawar’s licensed pistol.
After the incident, Pawar rushed her to the hospital and attempted to leave the area, police said. He was subsequently traced and taken into custody.
Officials added that the woman worked as a property dealer and was aware of Pawar’s marital status. Her family members were informed and later submitted a written complaint, prompting a detailed investigation.
The family has alleged that Pawar misled her about his marriage and pressured her emotionally, which they claim led to the extreme step. Based on the complaint and preliminary findings, Pawar, who was posted in Delhi, has been arrested on charges of abetment of suicide and under provisions of the Arms Act and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
