NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police head constable has been arrested for allegedly shooting dead a 30-year-old Enforcement Directorate (ED) staffer with his licensed pistol during a wedding function in north Delhi’s Wazirabad on Monday night. Two of his relatives have also been taken into custody.
The victim, Ashish, a resident of Katha village in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district, was employed as multi-tasking staff with the ED. Late on Monday, Wazirabad police received information that a man with a gunshot wound had been admitted to the trauma centre in Timarpur, where he was declared dead. He had been brought to the hospital by his younger brother, Anuj.
In his statement to police, Anuj said he and Ashish had attended a neighbour’s wedding at Gulshan Vatika in Wazirabad. Their neighbour Pravesh, a head constable in Delhi Police’s traffic unit who possessed a licensed pistol, was also present at the function along with his brother Sandeep and brothers-in-law Vipin and Vikash.
Anuj alleged that Pravesh bore a grudge against Ashish. About three months ago, Pravesh had raised a dispute with their father, which was later resolved. However, Anuj claimed that Pravesh continued to threaten his brother.
According to the complaint, as the brothers were preparing to return to their village on Monday night, Pravesh and his associates allegedly restrained Ashish and shot him in the chest before fleeing the scene.
Ashish was initially taken to a nearby private hospital and later shifted to the Timarpur trauma centre, where doctors declared him dead.
Based on Anuj’s statement, police registered a case under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act. Pravesh, along with Sandeep and Vipin, has been arrested, and the licensed pistol allegedly used in the shooting has been recovered.
