The Delhi Police Crime Branch on Friday arrested a 48-year-old man who had been on the run for 32 years in connection with a 1994 double murder and dacoity case involving the killing of two sadhvis at a spiritual ashram in east Delhi.
The accused, identified as Lalit, was arrested from Mangolpuri on Monday, where police said he had been working as a packaging labourer at a factory.
According to Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) HGS Dhaliwal, Lalit was among the main accused in the case. Police allege that he and three accomplices strangled the two sadhvis and fled with cash and jewellery.
The three other accused — Sunil Kumar, Dilip Ram and Sushil — were arrested earlier. Lalit, however, remained absconding after the case was registered at Shakarpur police station.
“Lalit had been evading arrest for 32 years by changing his identity and working at different places in Bihar and Delhi. He was declared a proclaimed offender by a court on October 26, 1995,” Dhaliwal said.
According to the officer, Lalit remained in Bihar until 2000, where he worked at different locations before eventually moving to Delhi.
After relocating to the capital, he worked as a packaging labourer at several manufacturing units while allegedly concealing his identity and past, police said.
Lalit married in May 2017 and has a wife and a five-year-old son, Dhaliwal added.
