NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old man and his wife were found dead at their residence in the Jyoti Nagar area of New Delhi on Thursday, in what police believe to be a suspected suicide pact.
The couple was discovered unconscious in separate rooms at their home in Jyoti Nagar after their two sons returned from dinner and alerted the authorities.
According to police sources, the sons, aged between 25 and 26, had stepped out briefly and found their parents unresponsive when they came back about an hour later. A call regarding the suspected suicide was received around 12.05 am on Friday, following which a police team rushed to the spot.
“A husband and wife were found dead in separate rooms in their house,” a senior police officer said. Crime and forensic teams were deployed to collect evidence. Investigators found no signs of forced entry or foul play.
A suicide note recovered from the house reportedly referred to the family’s mounting debts and financial hardship. Police said the couple had been struggling to cope with instability caused by unpaid loans and the lack of steady income.
“The contents of the note are being verified,” an officer said.
The bodies were sent to GTB Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police said the couple had earlier run a small factory, which had shut down, leaving them without a reliable source of livelihood. Their sons were doing small jobs to support the family, but financial difficulties persisted.
Proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which deals with suicide investigations, have been initiated. Authorities are continuing their probe and are recording statements from family members and neighbours to establish the full circumstances surrounding the deaths.
