NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday responded warmly to US President Donald Trump’s positive remarks on ongoing trade negotiations, with both leaders expressing confidence that discussions will move forward.

“India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will unlock the limitless potential of the India-US partnership,” Modi posted on X. He added that both teams were working to conclude the talks “at the earliest,” and that he looked forward to speaking with Trump to secure “a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people.”

Soon after, Trump amplified Modi’s remarks by sharing a screenshot of the post on Truth Social. Earlier in the day, the US President had announced: “India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address trade barriers between our two nations. I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks. I feel certain there will be no difficulty in reaching a successful conclusion for both of our great countries.”

The change in Trump’s tone comes against the backdrop of a recent tariff escalation. The US administration imposed a 25% duty on Indian goods, along with another 25% levy on India’s Russian oil imports—bringing total tariffs to 50%.

Despite his earlier criticism of India’s oil trade with Russia, Trump struck a conciliatory note last week, praising Modi as a “great Prime Minister” and assuring that the two leaders would “always be friends.” He downplayed tensions, saying, “There is nothing to worry about. We just have moments on occasion,” though he reiterated his concerns over energy imports from Moscow.

The leaders’ exchanges signal a possible easing of friction after weeks of strain. While tariffs remain a sticking point, both sides appear keen to keep dialogue open and preserve the broader strategic partnership.
