Climeon’s latest waste heat recovery solution, HeatPower 300 Marine, received a positive reception when it was introduced to the industry at Seatrade Cruise Global in April. The low-temp waste heat recovery system (WHR) is designed by marine engineers for application in the maritime industry and heralds a new era in sustainable shipping.

What Is HeatPower 300 Marine?

Built exclusively for the shipping sector, HeatPower 300 Marine is designed to deliver optimal performance and enhanced safety amidst challenging onboard conditions.

Increasing energy efficiency and sustainability, Climeon’s HeatPower 300 Marine system can produce up to 1MW of clean electricity and reduce fuel consumption by up to 5%.

With the potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 62,500 metric tonnes over a ship’s 25-year lifetime and a ROI payback period of just 2-5 years, HeatPower 300 Marine provides shipowners with a durable, cost-efficient and effective way to meet environmental regulations and maximize energy efficiency.

Suitable for a variety of vessels, including cruise ships, containerships and cargo ships, the WHR system uses onboard sources of waste heat to generate clean, carbon-free electricity. This green energy is then fed back to the ship’s grid and used to power onboard operations, thus reducing the use of diesel-powered generators and minimizing fuel consumption.

Already in use on Maersk, Virgin Voyage’s and Viking Line vessels, Climeon’s WHR system uses ORC technology to repurpose low temperature waste heat, which vessel’s produce in abundance but usually release into the atmosphere. With HeatPower 300 Marine, however, this previously worthless byproduct can be converted into a valuable, energy-saving asset.

As well as delivering world-leading conversion efficiency, the HeatPower 300 Marine system is compact, modular and scalable, which makes it perfect for onboard integration. With automated, remote maintenance via Climeon Live and marine-specific construction, Climeon’s HeatPower 300 Marine system simplifies onboard energy efficiency, cuts fuel consumption and significantly reduces CO2 emissions.

Why Low-Temp Waste Heat Recovery?

The IMO has ambitious decarbonization targets for the shipping industry, and, in turn, shipowners are under pressure to increase the energy efficiency of their vessels. As regulations become more stringent and ships are subject to EEDI, EEXI and CII assessments, it’s vital that vessels can maintain optimal performance while emitting fewer emissions.

To date, numerous methods have been used in order to reduce carbon emissions throughout the sector but many of these measures have focused on operational modifications, such as slow steaming.

With innovative onboard technologies, like waste heat recovery, however, shipowners can achieve increased energy efficiency, regardless of a ship’s operational pattern. This gives operators increased flexibility and access to reduced costs, while facilitating regulatory compliance too.

Waste heat recovery isn’t necessarily a new concept in the maritime industry but the majority of applications thus far (e.g., waste heat recovery boilers and economizers) have used high temperature waste heat to produce energy.  However, the majority of onboard waste heat is actually produced at low temperature, which cannot be used in conjunction with high-temp waste heat consumers.

With low-temp maritime WHR systems, like HeatPower 300 Marine, vessels can utilize the low temperature waste heat that’s produced onboard and use it to produce clean electricity. As all vessels produce waste heat at low temperatures, this method of WHR has virtually universal application throughout the industry and can be used on almost any vessel.

Furthermore, Climeon’s HeatPower 300 Marine system offers a comparatively low payback period, as well as fiscal savings via reduced fuel usage and up to 1MW of onboard, carbon-free electricity.

As both new-build and existing ships are subject to increased environmental scrutiny, the ability to integrate HeatPower 300 Marine on to new vessels or retrofit the system on to existing ships gives owners the sector-specific solutions they need to combine optimal performance with enhanced energy efficiency.
