HYDERABAD: A 32-year-old businessman was killed after being hit by a speeding Mercedes on the Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge in the early hours of Sunday. The driver abandoned the vehicle at the scene and fled, police said.
The victim, identified as Shyam Raj, a resident of Hafeezpet, had stopped on the bridge with his wife around 3.15am. While she stood on the pedestrian walkway, Raj remained on the road capturing her photographs when the car, travelling at high speed, rammed into him. The impact was so severe that the vehicle reportedly flipped after hitting the railing.
Passersby rushed to help both the victim and the driver. However, amid the chaos, the driver managed to escape. Raj was immediately taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries later in the day.
Police said the couple had stepped out late at night to send a parcel and have dinner, and were returning home when they briefly stopped at the bridge. The car was travelling from Jubilee Hills towards the IKEA stretch when the accident occurred.
Investigations revealed that the Mercedes bore a West Bengal registration and is registered in the name of a company. Officials believe only one person was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Though CCTV cameras are installed in the area, the footage retrieved so far is unclear, police said. A case has been registered for causing death by negligence, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the absconding driver.
