New Delhi: The Bombay High Court has strongly criticised government अधिकारियों for what it termed the “audacity” of disobeying judicial orders, and issued a contempt notice to the director of the Staff Selection Commission, R.G. Singh, for alleged wilful non-compliance.

A bench of Justices Ravindra Ghuge and Hiten Venegaonkar expressed concern over a growing pattern of authorities ignoring court directives.

“This is a classic case wherein, prima facie, we find that even officers in the service of this nation have displayed the audacity to disobey the orders of this court. Much turns upon the discipline of such officers in respecting the majesty of law,” the bench observed.

The court noted that such instances are no longer isolated, pointing out that hundreds of contempt petitions are filed annually, most involving state or central government officials accused of failing to comply with judicial directions.

The contempt notice arises from a case involving two Pune residents, Sushant Sarode and Aniket Jadhav, who had applied for recruitment to central armed police forces, including the CISF and BSF. Despite earlier orders directing their induction into training, the commission allegedly failed to act.

The candidates had initially been rejected during physical tests over a marginal shortfall in height, which the court had earlier deemed insignificant.

Expressing alarm at the trend, the bench said it was “appalled” by the increasing frequency of such violations and stressed the need for strict adherence to court orders. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on Wednesday.
