Nashik: A 34-year-old visually impaired man and his mother have been detained for allegedly murdering the man’s three-and-a-half-year-old son and attempting to kill his wife by pushing them into a well in Kingaon village of Yawal taluka in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 8.30 a.m. on Sunday following a domestic dispute. The man’s 27-year-old wife, who is reportedly around 70% visually impaired, survived by holding onto a wooden support inside the well, while her young son drowned.
Police said the woman alleged that she had faced opposition from her husband’s family during her pregnancy after relatives were told the child could also be born visually impaired. Despite the objections, she chose to continue the pregnancy, which reportedly led to frequent disputes within the family. She subsequently stayed at her parental home for nearly two-and-a-half years.
Jalgaon Superintendent of Police Shrikant Dhivare said the woman, her husband and her mother-in-law had gone to the family’s farm well on Sunday to perform a religious ritual. During the visit, the mother-in-law allegedly pushed the woman and her son into the well.
According to investigators, the mother-in-law later alerted villagers, claiming that the two had accidentally fallen into the well. When local residents reached the spot, they found the woman alive inside the well, clinging to a wooden structure, while the child had already drowned.
The case was initially treated as an accidental drowning. However, during questioning, the woman alleged that the incident was a deliberate attempt to kill both her and her son. Following her statement, police detained her husband and mother-in-law for questioning.
Based on the woman’s complaint, the Yawal Police have registered a case under Sections 103(1) (murder), 109(1) (attempt to murder), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said the investigation is ongoing, and no formal arrests had been made at the time of reporting.
