A 30-year-old businessman from Bengaluru died in a freak motorcycle accident allegedly caused by a loose roadside cable near Vidhana Soudha, just a day before his engagement ceremony.
Vishal M Lunawat, a dry fruits trader from Chamarajpet, was returning with his cousin after dinner in Jayanagar late Sunday night when the accident occurred near the CID headquarters signal, around 200 metres from Vidhana Soudha.
According to family members, a white cable hanging across the road became entangled with their motorcycle shortly after they crossed the signal.
“The wire got stuck in the bike while we were moving. He lost control and we skidded,” Vishal’s cousin said.
The cousin suffered minor injuries, while Vishal sustained a severe injury to his left knee after the motorcycle fell on him. Family members said he was conscious immediately after the crash and complained that he could not move his leg.
He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors reportedly identified a fracture near his knee. However, while relatives were shifting him to another hospital for orthopaedic treatment, Vishal suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness.
“We don’t know what happened. He collapsed and never woke up again,” the cousin said.
The tragedy struck hours before Vishal’s engagement ceremony, for which relatives had already gathered in the city. Instead of attending the celebration, family members performed his last rites on Monday.
The family has blamed civic negligence for the accident, alleging that the loose overhead cable remained hanging on the road even after the incident. A video shared by relatives reportedly showed the cable tangled near the roadside.
Calling the incident a “preventable tragedy,” family members accused civic authorities of failing to address dangerous road conditions and hanging wires despite repeated complaints by citizens.
Vishal’s cousin said the accident could have become even more serious if a bus approaching from behind had not braked in time.
Another relative alleged that authorities aggressively enforce building regulations while ignoring basic civic hazards such as loose cables, potholes and garbage.
The family has demanded accountability from civic authorities, saying negligence in maintaining public infrastructure ultimately cost Vishal his life.
