Bengaluru’s rental market has come under renewed scrutiny after a Reddit user claimed that a landlord demanded nearly ₹70,000 a month for a 2BHK apartment along with a deposit of around ₹3–4 lakh.
The tenant shared the experience in a Reddit post titled “Bangalore’s rental market is getting ridiculous”, saying the apartment was within walking distance of their workplace and that they were initially willing to pay a premium for the location.
However, the tenant said the apartment did not offer the level of facilities they expected at that price.
‘Fully furnished’ apartment with limited amenities
According to the Reddit post, the apartment had a decorated living room and balconies with good views. However, the tenant claimed that both bedrooms were too small to comfortably fit a queen-size bed and a work desk.
The apartment was advertised as fully furnished, but the tenant said it contained only one bed, two sofas and a small television. They claimed there was no refrigerator, washing machine or dining table, while the second bedroom did not have a bed.
The monthly rent, including maintenance, was reportedly around ₹70,000, while the landlord was seeking a deposit of approximately ₹3–4 lakh. The tenant also claimed that the landlord wanted an annual rent increase of 7–8%, while other landlords in the area were reportedly asking for increases of up to 10%.
The tenant eventually offered ₹65,000 with a three-month deposit, but said the proposal was rejected.
“I walked away without regret,” the user wrote.
Tenant questions rising rental costs
The Reddit user questioned whether Bengaluru’s high rents are sustainable for working professionals, particularly as living costs continue to increase.
The tenant argued that paying an additional ₹10,000–₹15,000 every month could significantly affect savings and investments over time. They encouraged prospective renters to inspect room sizes, assess furnishings, understand maintenance charges and potential deductions, compare similar properties and negotiate before agreeing to a rental price.
The user also argued that tenants should be willing to walk away when they believe a property does not justify its asking price.
Reddit users weigh in
The post prompted a range of responses from other Reddit users, with several arguing that high rents persist because some tenants are willing to pay them.
One commenter said that landlords continue to quote such prices because someone will eventually agree to rent the property, while another attributed Bengaluru’s high rents partly to the difficulty of commuting from areas farther away from major office hubs.
Other commenters shared experiences of what they considered excessive rental demands. One user claimed that their apartment in France cost less than the Bengaluru property described in the post.
Another commenter suggested that tenants collectively resisting high asking prices could eventually put downward pressure on rents, pointing to Hyderabad’s apartment market as an example.
The discussion highlights the continuing debate over Bengaluru’s rental costs, particularly in areas close to major employment hubs where demand for housing remains strong. However, the rental figures and experiences described in the Reddit discussion are individual accounts and may not represent the broader Bengaluru housing market.
