A 21-year-old Austrian man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after admitting that he planned an ISIS-inspired terrorist attack targeting a concert by Taylor Swift during the European leg of her Eras Tour in Vienna.
Plot Targeted Sold-Out Vienna Concerts
The man, identified in court only as Beran A under Austrian privacy laws, pleaded guilty to planning an attack on one of Swift’s sold-out performances at Ernst Happel Stadium in August 2024.
Authorities said the planned assault had the potential to cause mass casualties among concertgoers.
CIA Tip-Off Led to Concert Cancellations
The three scheduled concerts were cancelled shortly before they were due to begin after Austrian authorities received intelligence from the CIA regarding the suspected terror plot.
Nearly 200,000 fans were expected to attend the shows.
Suspect Radicalised Online
Investigators said Beran A had become radicalised through online extremist content and had pledged allegiance to Islamic State.
According to court proceedings, he intended to attack concert attendees using knives or homemade explosives.
Attempts Made to Obtain Weapons
Authorities said the accused unsuccessfully tried to acquire illegal weapons, including a machine gun and a hand grenade.
Court documents stated that he used an Islamic State propaganda video as a guide while attempting to manufacture explosives.
Defendant Apologises in Court
During proceedings in Wiener Neustadt, south of Vienna, Beran A expressed remorse before the jury deliberated.
“I would just like to say that I am sorry,” he told the court.
Psychiatrist Finds No Mental Illness
Court-appointed psychiatrist Peter Hoffmann testified that the defendant showed no signs of mental illness and said there was no psychiatric explanation for his radicalisation.
Defence lawyer Anna Mair argued that her client was “not an ideological mastermind.”
International Attention Due to Eras Tour Connection
The case drew global attention because it involved Swift’s Eras Tour, one of the highest-profile and most successful concert tours in history.
Swift later described the cancellation of the Vienna concerts as having potentially prevented “a massacre situation.”
A documentary about the tour revealed that she learned of the alleged bomb plot while travelling to Austria.
Second Man Also Stood Trial
A second 21-year-old defendant from Slovakia, identified as Arda K, was also tried in connection with the broader investigation.
Authorities alleged both men had links to an Islamic State-affiliated cell.
Links Alleged to Wider International Plots
Prosecutors said the network was connected to plans for attacks in Mecca as well as locations in Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.
However, investigators stated that Arda K was not directly involved in the Vienna concert plot.
Vienna Plot Admitted, Other Allegations Denied
While Beran A admitted his role in planning the Vienna attack, he denied separate allegations concerning the alleged international attack plans. The court nevertheless convicted him for his role in the plot against the concert audience and imposed a 15-year prison sentence.
