LUCKNOW: The accused was slain in a confrontation with Lucknow police early Friday, hours after the kidnapping and rape of a three-year-old child who was sleeping with her mother beneath a bridge close to the Alambagh metro station. CCTV footage showed the culprit, Deepak Verma, a repeat offender with numerous criminal complaints filed against him at various city police stations, running away. At approximately 3:30 am on Thursday, the child was riding a white scooter.

Several police teams were established right away following the event, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Zone) Ashish Srivastava, and a reward of one lakh rupees was offered for information that resulted in Verma’s arrest.

Police stopped Verma in Cantonment, close to Devi Kheda, based on the scooter’s registration information and a tip. “He fired at the police squad after being ordered to surrender. He was wounded in retaliatory firing,” Srivastava added. After being brought to a hospital, Verma was pronounced dead by the staff.

When a disabled person heard the girl’s screams approximately 500 meters from where she was sleeping and told the victim’s family, officers from One Stop, an organization that supports women, alerted the police at around 10 a.m. on Thursday, bringing the event to light.

According to the victim’s family, “We went to bed after finishing the work. The girl was taken away late on Wednesday night. We learned about the incident after an elderly man woke us up at four in the morning on Thursday.
