ABS has granted approval in principle to Singapore’s Seatrium for its NEXTGEN Energy Hub concept, an offshore design integrating ammonia bunkering, power generation and electric vessel charging, according to ABS.
The approval was presented in Singapore by Matthew Tremblay, ABS senior vice president for global offshore markets, to Aziz Merchant, Seatrium vice president for technology and new product development.
The concept combines ammonia storage and bunkering, power generation and marine electric vessel charging on a single offshore platform.
ABS reviewed the design under its rules for building and classing offshore units and requirements covering ammonia fuels, lithium-ion batteries and power services.
The approval follows an earlier memorandum of understanding between ABS and Seatrium covering maritime innovation, regulatory readiness, classification and verification pathways for emerging offshore and marine technologies.
Seatrium is a Singapore-incorporated offshore, marine and energy engineering group.
ABS, formally the American Bureau of Shipping, is a US classification society providing classification, certification and technical advisory services for marine and offshore assets.
