A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Peru’s southern coast on Tuesday, authorities said, with no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.
According to Peru’s Geophysical Institute, the earthquake occurred at 12:57 pm local time in the Ica region. The epicentre was located around 41 kilometres south of the city of Ica.
The tremors were also moderately felt in the capital city, Lima, situated nearly 400 kilometres away from the epicentre.
Residents in the affected region reported experiencing strong shaking. One resident of Ica told local radio that he and his wife rushed out onto the street during the quake.
Peru is situated along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area known for high seismic activity, and records at least 100 earthquakes every year.
