BENGALURU: A tense four-hour standoff unfolded in Devanahalli on Tuesday after a man accused in multiple cases climbed a nine-storey apartment building and threatened to end his life, demanding that the district’s deputy commissioner be brought to the spot.

The man, identified as Anand, scaled the private building near the Devanahalli bypass around 3 pm, shouting that he wanted “justice” and refusing to come down unless his demand was met.

Police, rescue teams launch operation

Police, along with fire and emergency services, rushed to the scene and began efforts to negotiate with him. Despite repeated appeals, Anand remained adamant for several hours.

Sources said he is accused in two cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and had previously spent around four years in jail in connection with one of the cases. He is also accused of attempting to assault the Chikkaballapur Deputy Commissioner.

Emotional appeals and tense moments

In a dramatic turn, Anand’s mother arrived at the scene and made an emotional plea, urging him to come down. However, he initially refused, continuing to insist that he had been wronged.

During the standoff, he also claimed that his mobile phone had been compromised, though the exact reason behind his protest remains unclear.

Standoff ends after 4 hours

After nearly four hours of continuous negotiations, authorities managed to persuade him to descend safely at around 7 pm, bringing the situation under control without any injuries.

Devanahalli police have registered a case and initiated further investigation into the incident.
