At least 39 pilgrims returning from the annual Amarnath Yatra were injured after a speeding bus skidded off the road in the Kangan area of Ganderbal district on Tuesday, officials said.
According to authorities, the accident occurred near Ganiwan when the driver reportedly lost control of the bus while negotiating a sharp curve. The vehicle crashed onto a nearby house, causing extensive damage to the structure. However, the house prevented the bus from plunging into the Sindh River, averting a potentially more serious tragedy. Officials confirmed that no one was inside the house at the time of the accident.
Local residents, security personnel and emergency responders quickly launched a rescue operation, evacuating the injured pilgrims and shifting them to nearby hospitals. Most of the injured are reported to have sustained minor injuries and are undergoing treatment.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said he had spoken with the Deputy Commissioner of Ganderbal and health officials to review the situation. He directed authorities to ensure the injured pilgrims receive the best possible medical care and all necessary assistance.
Officials are investigating the cause of the accident, while the condition of the injured pilgrims continues to be monitored.
