Police have detained 36 suspected Bangladeshi nationals at Jogamaya Ferry Ghat in Assam’s Dhubri district for allegedly entering India illegally.
According to police, the group was detained on Friday following intelligence inputs. Initial investigations suggest they entered India through the international border in Meghalaya before travelling to Assam via South Salmara-Mankachar district.
The men, reportedly residents of Chapainawabganj district in Bangladesh, arrived at the ferry ghat by boat from Hatsingimari. Police said around 120 people were travelling on the boat, and 36 were identified as suspected Bangladeshi nationals after screening.
Authorities recovered documents and mobile phones from the group. Their motive, route of entry and intended destination are being investigated.
Dhubri police said legal action would be taken under applicable laws, while deportation procedures would be initiated in consultation with the concerned authorities.
