Three Indian nationals who had recently gone missing in Iran have been found and rescued by Tehran police, according to a statement from the Iranian Embassy in India on Tuesday.

“Three missing Indian citizens freed by Tehran police,” the embassy posted on X, citing local Iranian media.

According to Iran’s Mehr news agency, the men—residents of Punjab—were detained in Iran on May 1 while en route to Australia. They had reportedly been lured with promises of high-paying jobs by a local travel agent.

Tehran-based Tasnim News Agency reported that the three were rescued during a police operation targeting kidnappers in Varamin, a suburb south of Tehran.

Background of the Case

On May 28, the Indian Embassy said it was alerted by the families of the missing men, who reported their sudden disappearance after traveling to Iran.

In response, the Iranian Embassy stated that its Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Consular Affairs Department was actively handling the matter. It also issued a warning to Indian citizens, urging them not to fall for false promises made by unauthorized agents or illegal travel agencies offering overseas jobs.
