At least two people were killed and six others injured in a shooting at an apartment building in downtown Minneapolis, according to authorities.
The shooting was reported at around 5:45 pm local time, following which dozens of police vehicles and officers converged on the area. Pedestrians continued to move through parts of the vicinity as authorities responded to the incident.
The area surrounding the shooting includes an apartment complex, the Minneapolis Convention Center, several hotels and a hospital.
University Campus Placed Under Lockdown
The nearby University of St. Thomas’ Minneapolis campus was placed under lockdown “out of an abundance of caution”, a university spokesperson said.
Hennepin County Medical Center received six patients following the shooting, one of whom later died, according to CNN.
Police initially reported that two officers were among the multiple victims and urged the public to avoid the area around 15 East Grant Street.
FBI, ATF Respond to Active Shooter Situation
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said its special agents were responding to an active shooter situation reported near East Grant Street and South Marquette in downtown Minneapolis.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also confirmed that it was aware of the shooting and had personnel responding to the scene.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau would provide “any and all resources necessary” to assist local authorities.
Authorities continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, while police maintained a presence around the affected area and urged people to stay away from the scene.
