A 17-year-old boy in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district approached the police seeking help to prevent his partially paralysed 55-year-old father from marrying for the seventh time, after allegedly being assaulted for opposing the proposal.
The teenager approached the Ahraula police after his father, Amarjeet Maurya, allegedly beat him when he objected to the planned marriage. During questioning, Maurya admitted that he had already married six times.
According to his relatives, Maurya’s first wife died just days after their wedding, while his second wife died after giving birth to three daughters. His other four wives, including the teenager’s mother, eventually separated from him after he refused to transfer land in their names.
The boy alleged that his father had also forced him to work as a labourer to repay debts incurred after mortgaging ancestral land. According to the teenager, his father borrowed money to finance his repeated marriages. He also claimed that his mother had subsequently left the family and gone away with another man.
The teenager said he learned that his father was planning another marriage and decided to oppose it because some neighbours were allegedly influencing his father to borrow more money and were eyeing his 3.5-bigha property.
“I wanted to stop him from marrying another woman and taking on more debt so that the land could be saved. But when I reached home to speak to my father, he assaulted me,” the boy said.
Following the teenager’s complaint, the officer in charge of the Ahraula police station was directed to investigate the matter. Preliminary findings indicated that a property dispute existed between the father and son.
ASP (Rural) Chirag Jain said further action would be determined after the investigation was completed.
