BHUBANESWAR: A tragic railway accident struck Odisha’s Cuttack district on Sunday, as 11 coaches of the Bengaluru-Kamakhya AC Superfast Express derailed near Nergundi station, leaving one person dead and at least 25 others injured.
The derailment occurred around 11:54 AM in the Cuttack-Nergundi section under the Khurda Road division of East Coast Railway (ECoR). Senior railway officials, including the ECoR General Manager and the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Khurda Road, promptly arrived at the scene to oversee relief and rescue operations. Both accident relief and medical teams were dispatched to the site.
In a statement, an ECoR spokesperson said:
“A special train is being arranged to transport stranded passengers to their destinations. Help desks have been established at Bhubaneswar, Bhadrak, and Cuttack railway stations, and helpline numbers have been shared for passengers and their families.”
Ashok Kumar Mishra, Chief Public Relations Officer of ECoR, stated that the cause of the derailment is yet to be ascertained.
“Our immediate priority is to ensure the safety and comfort of affected passengers and manage the diversion of trains on this route,” he added.
As a result of the derailment, three trains have been diverted.
