Deoria (UP): A 42-year-old man died after attempting to jump from a moving train he had mistakenly boarded at Salempur railway station on Thursday night, police said.

The victim, Sanjay Prasad, a resident of Rewali village under Lar police station limits, worked as a labourer with a private company. He was headed to Mumbai after spending four months at home.

According to officials, Prasad’s brother dropped him at Salempur station, where he accidentally boarded a Barhaj-bound local train instead of his scheduled train to Mumbai. Realising the mistake only after the train began moving, Prasad tried to jump off. He lost balance, fell onto the tracks, and was fatally run over.

Station House Officer Sunil Kumar Patel confirmed that the body has been sent for post-mortem, and further proceedings are underway.
