LUCKNOW: A married man allegedly stabbed a 30-year-old woman after she refused to marry him and later attempted suicide in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district on Saturday night, police said.
The incident took place in Madhavapur village under the jurisdiction of Murtihā police station. According to police, the accused, identified as Jairam (38), went to the woman’s house and pressured her to marry him. When she refused, he allegedly attacked her with a knife, leaving her seriously injured.
After assaulting the woman, Jairam reportedly stabbed himself in the abdomen and consumed pesticide that he had brought with him in an attempt to end his life.
Hearing the woman’s screams, family members and neighbours rushed to the scene and immediately took both of them to Bahraich Medical College, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
Police said the incident is believed to be linked to a relationship that developed nearly two years ago between the two. The woman is married, and her husband works as a labourer in Mumbai. Jairam, who is also married, allegedly used to visit her house frequently.
However, according to investigators, the woman had recently stopped communicating with him.
In her statement to police at the hospital, the injured woman alleged that Jairam forcibly broke open the door of her house before attacking her when she refused his demand for marriage.
Circle Officer of Mihinpurwa, Pradyumna Singh, said a case is being registered based on the woman’s complaint and further investigation into the incident is underway.
