AGRA: For the past three months, 66-year-old Sushila Devi has been sitting anxiously outside the Allahabad High Court complex, hoping for any news about her missing son—36-year-old Inspector Anuj Kumar of the UP Police. He disappeared on September 17 after allegedly being picked up by Aligarh police following a quarrel with his wife. With her eyes fixed on the court and hands folded in prayer, she now relies entirely on the High Court, which is hearing her habeas corpus plea on Wednesday.

“I am exhausted from running to every police office in Aligarh, but no one tells me anything,” she told TOI, her voice heavy with despair. “How can a police officer vanish for three months? Why must I come to the High Court just to find my son? The missing GD entry was made on October 18—three days after we moved the HC. What were they doing for a whole month?”

Fear lingers in her words. “I don’t even know if he is alive. They say he fought with his wife. Even if that is true, does that mean they won’t look for him? I am praying the High Court helps bring him back.”

DIG (Aligarh Range) Prabhakar Chaudhary said a detailed probe is underway, given the seriousness of the family’s allegations.

Inspector Anuj Kumar was posted in Aligarh when he went missing. Police sources claim he was suspended on September 19 for “misbehaving with seniors,” and that his family was informed. On Monday (December 8), police recovered a “mutilated body” from railway tracks, and preliminary findings suggest it could be the missing inspector.

Documents accessed by TOI reveal that the GD entry filed on October 18 was converted into an FIR on November 12—after at least two HC hearings and notices issued to all concerned, including the Aligarh SSP. The FIR, registered at Mahua Kheda police station under BNS Section 140(3) (kidnapping), was handed over to Hathras Sikandarao circle DSP J. N. Asthana on November 13.

Asthana confirmed that the investigation is progressing. “We are awaiting responses from both Kumar’s wife’s side and his mother’s side. DNA samples have also been requested.”

Police sources in Aligarh said Anuj Kumar joined the force in 2012 on compassionate grounds after his father died on duty. The couple had no children even after four years of marriage, which often led to quarrels between them.
