Roorkee: Two youths from Meerut were killed late Saturday night after their car plunged into the Gangnahar canal near Manglaur.

The victims were identified as Saurabh Sharma (23) and Ayush Sharma (21), residents of Kurali village in Meerut. Neighbours and close friends, the two were travelling from Roorkee to Meerut via the canal embankment road.

The accident occurred around 11 pm near the Mohammadpur Power House in the Narsan area, where a sharp blind turn lacks warning signage. Police said the car failed to negotiate the turn, veered off the road and fell into an escape canal nearly 20 feet deep.

A rescue operation was launched by Manglaur police, who recovered the vehicle using a crane. Both youths were found dead inside the car. Although the canal contained only about a foot of stagnant water, the vehicle suffered extensive damage due to the fall.

“The car appears to have been driven at high speed. The driver lost control at the sharp turn, causing the vehicle to plunge into the canal,” said Amarjeet Singh, inspector in charge of Manglaur police station.

Family members said Ayush, a BPharma graduate, had been working with a pharmaceutical company near Roorkee and had recently quit his job. He had called Saurabh to help transport his belongings back to Meerut, said Anil Sharma, a relative.
