WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said Saturday he would issue an executive order requiring voter identification for every US election, doubling down on his push to tighten voting laws—an area where presidential authority is highly limited.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump declared: “Voter ID Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS! I Will Be Doing An Executive Order To That End!!!” He offered no further details on the planned order.
Trump also repeated his opposition to voting machines and his intention to restrict mail-in ballots, saying they should be reserved only for the seriously ill and military members serving overseas.
The pledge underscores Trump’s long-standing campaign to reshape US election laws, which he has frequently attacked and falsely blamed for his 2020 loss. But any executive order on voting rules is expected to face immediate legal challenges.
The Constitution gives states primary authority to regulate elections and Congress the power to override state laws. The president, however, has no direct power to dictate voting procedures, raising questions about the enforceability of Trump’s proposed order.
