Orlando, Florida: A 32-year-old man died after riding a roller coaster at Universal Orlando Resort’s newly opened Epic Universe theme park, officials confirmed.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, who was found unresponsive on the Stardust Racers attraction on Wednesday. He was taken to hospital but later pronounced dead.
Medical examiner Joshua Stephany ruled the death an accident, citing “multiple blunt impact injuries” as the cause. No further details on the injuries were released.
Universal Orlando Resort said in a statement: “We are devastated by this tragic event and extend our sincerest sympathies to the guest’s loved ones. We are fully cooperating with Orange County and the ongoing investigation.”
The Stardust Racers, a dual-launch roller coaster that reaches speeds of up to 62 mph, was immediately shut down after the incident on September 17 and remains closed during the investigation. Opened in May, the ride spans 5,000 feet of track and is one of the park’s flagship attractions.
Questions over findings
Industry experts raised concerns about the autopsy report. Dennis Speigel, CEO of International Theme Park Services, said the findings were “pretty shocking.”
“Was it the head or the chest? Was he banging around? Was he in his seat properly? Was it an accident caused by the ride or by him doing something?” he asked.
Park background
Epic Universe, Universal’s fourth Florida park and the first major new theme park in the state since 1999, features themed areas including Super Nintendo World and the Harry Potter Ministry of Magic. Florida’s largest parks are not subject to state safety inspections but must report any injuries or fatalities.
State records show three incidents have already been reported at Epic Universe since its May opening, involving guests suffering dizziness, chest pains, and other health issues. The investigation into Zavala’s death is ongoing, and Universal said it could not comment further until authorities conclude their review.
