VISAKHAPATNAM: A tragic industrial accident at a pharmaceutical unit in Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapalle district claimed the lives of two workers and left another in critical condition after a toxic gas leak early Thursday morning.
The incident occurred at Sai Sreyam Pharmaceutical Pvt Ltd, located in the Parawada Pharma City industrial hub. According to initial reports, the victims — Parimi Chandrasekhar (safety manager), Saragadam Kumar (safety officer), and Baidu Baisal — were exposed to poisonous fumes while handling hazardous waste chemicals at the company’s treatment plant.
Authorities said the workers were inspecting chemical waste levels when the gas leak occurred, leading to instant fatalities for Chandrasekhar and Kumar. Baisal was rushed to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition under intensive care.
The exact cause of the leak is yet to be determined, and investigations are underway to assess whether safety protocols were followed.
The incident has sparked outrage among local trade union leaders and activists, who are demanding ₹1 crore compensation for each of the deceased workers’ families. They have also called for stricter enforcement of industrial safety norms and accountability from management.
Officials from the district administration and pollution control board have visited the site and are expected to submit a detailed report. Meanwhile, the company has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
