Durgapur: Police on Sunday arrested three men in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 23-year-old MBBS student from Odisha, studying at a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal.
The accused — Sheikh Riyazuddin, Apu Barui, and Firdaus Sheikh — were picked up from their homes in Birja village, located less than a kilometre from the college and about 3 km from the forested area where the assault reportedly took place on Friday night.
Firdaus is employed as a Group D staff member at a private hospital in Durgapur, officials said.
All three were produced before a Durgapur court on Sunday. No legal representation was made on their behalf during the hearing.
Police have also detained a classmate of the survivor and another man, identified as Sheikh Nasiruddin, 24, for questioning. Nasiruddin’s motorcycle, allegedly used by the accused to flee the scene, has been seized.
