NEW DELHI: A Tejas fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed during an aerobatic display at the Dubai Air Show on Friday, resulting in the death of its pilot, the IAF confirmed. The indigenous HAL-built light combat jet went down around 2:10 pm (local time) after a nose-dive mid-manoeuvre on the final day of the event at Al Maktoum International Airport.
The IAF announced that a court of inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of the crash.
“In an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show today, an IAF Tejas aircraft met with an accident. The pilot sustained fatal injuries. The Indian Air Force deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family in this moment of grief,” the force said in an official statement.
Black smoke rose over the airfield as shocked spectators, including families and children, looked on.
The Dubai Airshow, being held from November 17–21 at the DWC Airshow Site, drew participation from global aerospace leaders. The Dubai government confirmed the crash, noting that emergency teams responded immediately.
