Gurgaon: A young software engineer couple was found dead in their rented flat at The Millennia, Sector 37 on Sunday evening, with police suspecting it to be a case of murder–suicide.
The deceased were identified as Ajay Kumar (from Prayagraj, UP), employed with an IT firm in Cyber City, and his wife Sweety Sharma (from West Bengal). The two, who had married in 2023 after years of courtship, had faced relationship troubles, leading them to live separately for about a year before reuniting recently.
Despite the reconciliation, family members said arguments continued between them. On Sunday, Ajay sent a video message to a group of friends, in which he allegedly confessed to strangling Sweety and declared his plan to end his life. Alarmed friends alerted relatives, who then rushed to the flat with police.
When police broke open the locked door, they found both Ajay and Sweety dead in the same room. According to preliminary investigations, Sweety may have been throttled with a cloth before Ajay died by suicide.
Sweety’s mother said she last spoke with her daughter around noon on Sunday, after which repeated calls went unanswered. She alleged that Ajay killed her daughter following frequent quarrels. Ajay’s cousin described him as introverted but academically bright, adding that the family was devastated.
The couple’s bodies have been sent for postmortem. Police have recorded statements from relatives and are awaiting a formal complaint from Sweety’s family before registering a case.
