SURAT: The body of a 57-year-old woman was found inside a bag near Kosad Awas in the jurisdiction of Amroli Police Station on Wednesday morning, prompting a murder investigation.

The body was discovered after a sanitation worker of the Surat Municipal Corporation noticed a foul-smelling bag on the roadside while cleaning the area and alerted the police.

Police later identified the victim as Hamida Khatun, who lived with her two sons in the H-2 block of Kosad Awas.

Her son, Pravekh Alam (24), had filed a missing person’s complaint on Tuesday stating that Khatun had left for the market in the morning but did not return. While police were searching for her, the bag containing the body was found. The clothes matched the description provided in the complaint.

Following the discovery, police registered a murder case and launched an investigation.

Officers from the Detection of Crime Branch also reached the spot, detained a couple of suspects and began questioning them along with Amroli police. Investigators identified possible suspects using CCTV footage from the surrounding area.

According to DCB sources, the case may be linked to a family dispute, and officers are probing whether any family member may have been involved.

Khatun originally hailed from Samastipur district, and her family had moved to Surat for work.
