NEW DELHI: OpenAI has officially unveiled its most advanced AI model yet — GPT-5, bringing significant improvements in accuracy, speed, reasoning, and math capabilities. At the global launch event, CEO Sam Altman highlighted India’s growing role in OpenAI’s global user base, calling the country an “incredibly fast-growing” market.
“India is our second-largest market in the world after the US, and it may well become our largest,” Altman said during a media briefing. “What users in India are doing with AI is really quite remarkable.”
He added that OpenAI is actively working with local partners to tailor AI solutions for India, including making the technology more accessible and affordable. Altman also revealed plans to visit India in September.
GPT-5: What’s New
Described by OpenAI as its “best model yet” for coding and agentic tasks, GPT-5 is a major leap from its predecessor, GPT-4. Altman called it a “significant step toward AGI” and the first model that feels like “you’re talking to a PhD-level expert.”
The model is available in three versions:
- GPT-5
- GPT-5-mini
- GPT-5-nano
These allow developers to choose based on performance, speed, and cost needs.
In the API, GPT-5 powers ChatGPT’s top-tier reasoning abilities. A separate variant, gpt-5-chat-latest, offers a more cost-efficient, non-reasoning version for general use.
