CHANDIGARH: In a disturbing repeat of an earlier tragedy, a Haryana police officer who had investigated former Rohtak IG Y. Puran Kumar in a corruption case died by suicide on Tuesday, leaving behind a three-page note and a video message claiming he was “sacrificing himself to awaken people.”

ASI Sandeep Kumar, posted with the Rohtak cyber cell, was found dead in a tubewell room at his maternal uncle’s farm in Ladhot village near Rohtak. His service weapon, handwritten note, and a 6.28-minute video were recovered from the spot, police said.

In the video, Sandeep accused Puran Kumar—who himself died by suicide on October 7—of being “a very corrupt officer,” claiming his death “wasn’t a caste case” but an effort “to avoid family humiliation.” “My grandfather fought for the country; now his grandson will do the same,” he said, adding that he lived honestly and followed the ideals of Bhagat Singh.

Sandeep alleged that during Kumar’s tenure as IG, “everything was for sale — pay money and get your posting,” and urged investigators to examine CDRs and CCTV footage for proof. He further accused the late officer of leveraging his wife’s IAS position and his MLA brother-in-law’s political influence to “cover up corruption.”

The ASI had earlier assisted in the arrest of Kumar’s former PSO, Sushil, in the same bribery probe. He also praised former SP Narendra Bijarnia, calling him “an honest officer who stood by truth,” even though Kumar had named Bijarnia and DGP Shatrujeet Kapur in his own suicide note.

Warning against caste-based divisions sparked by the IPS officer’s death, Sandeep wrote: “The poison of casteism is spreading. Why destroy the country for corrupt people?”

Rohtak SP Surender Singh Bhoria described Sandeep as “an honest and hardworking officer” and said police were maintaining heightened vigilance as tensions flared between Jat and Dalit groups in the area.

Sandeep’s cousin Sanjay said he had appeared deeply distressed in recent days. As news of his death spread, hundreds of villagers gathered at Ladhot, prompting police to strengthen security to prevent potential clashes.
