New Delhi: In an exceptionally rapid manner, the Union government finalized the procedures for the appointment of the Chief Justice of India within a mere seven days of commencing the process. As of Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Surya Kant as the next Chief Justice. He is scheduled to take his oath on November 24. On October 24, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal dispatched a letter to Chief Justice B R Gavai requesting his recommendation for the next Chief Justice. Upon returning to Delhi from an official trip to Bhutan, Chief Justice Gavai, on October 27, recommended the appointment of Justice Kant, the most senior judge of the Supreme Court, as the next Chief Justice. Previously, the three-stage process typically took two weeks to complete. The law minister expressed his sentiments on Twitter, stating: “I convey my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to him.” Justice Kant will serve a tenure exceeding one year and two months and will be the first individual from Haryana to lead the Supreme Court in its 75-year history.
