NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday embarked on a significant five-nation tour spanning Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America, with scheduled visits to Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia between July 2 and 9. The tour is aimed at deepening India’s ties with the Global South, expanding trade and development partnerships, and reinforcing multilateral cooperation through forums like BRICS, the African Union, ECOWAS, and CARICOM.

“I am confident that my visits to these five countries will further strengthen our bonds of friendship across the Global South, deepen engagements across the Atlantic, and reinforce our shared commitments through platforms such as BRICS, the African Union, ECOWAS, and CARICOM,” PM Modi said in his departure statement.

First Stop: Ghana – Enhancing Strategic Partnership

PM Modi’s first destination is Ghana, where he will be received by President John Dramani Mahama during his July 2–3 visit. The Prime Minister is expected to advance cooperation in key sectors such as investment, health, energy, development, and security.

“Ghana is a valued partner in the Global South and plays a key role in the African Union and ECOWAS,” said PM Modi, who is also scheduled to address the Ghanaian Parliament—a gesture he described as a “great honour” and a symbol of shared democratic values.

Reviving Historical Ties in Trinidad & Tobago

From July 3–4, PM Modi will visit Trinidad & Tobago, highlighting the 180-year-old cultural and ancestral ties that connect India to the Caribbean nation. He will meet President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who recently assumed office for her second term.

“This visit is an opportunity to rejuvenate the special bonds of ancestry and kinship that unite us,” the Prime Minister noted, underlining the importance of deep-rooted people-to-people relations.

A Historic First in Argentina

The tour then moves to Argentina, marking the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. In Buenos Aires, PM Modi will engage with President Javier Milei, with whom he previously met last year. Talks are expected to focus on boosting cooperation in trade, agriculture, energy, technology, and critical minerals.

“Argentina is a key economic partner in Latin America and a trusted collaborator in the G20,” said Modi, underscoring the shared commitment to global economic governance and development.

Crucial BRICS Engagement in Brazil

On July 6–7, PM Modi will be in Rio de Janeiro to attend the BRICS Summit, followed by a state visit to Brasilia. The BRICS platform—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—is expected to address pressing global challenges and promote a multipolar world order.

“India views BRICS as a vital platform for cooperation among emerging economies. Together, we seek a more peaceful, democratic, just, and balanced global order,” Modi stated.

In Brasilia, he will meet Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to further discuss shared priorities for the Global South. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Brazilian capital in nearly six decades.

Final Stop: Namibia – Celebrating Solidarity and Shared History

The final leg of the tour takes PM Modi to Namibia, where he will meet President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. Emphasizing the long-standing friendship rooted in a shared struggle against colonialism, the visit is set to highlight developmental cooperation and democratic solidarity.

“It will be a privilege to address the Joint Session of the Namibian Parliament as we celebrate our enduring solidarity and shared commitment to freedom and development,” Modi said.

Strategic Outreach to the Global South

PM Modi’s multi-nation visit is being seen as a major diplomatic outreach aimed at reinforcing India’s leadership and expanding its influence across Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. The tour reflects New Delhi’s growing role as a bridge between developing nations and global platforms, and comes at a time when the Global South is increasingly asserting its voice in shaping the international agenda.

Through enhanced bilateral ties, expanded trade, and collaborative efforts in multilateral forums, the visit aims to elevate India’s global engagement to new heights.
