Fazilka district: An NRI died in an accidental shooting in Dhani Sucha Singh village on Monday evening after a pistol tucked into his waist went off, police said.
The deceased, Harwinder Singh alias Sonu, had recently returned from abroad and was living in the village. He is survived by his wife and a two-year-old daughter. His last rites were performed on Tuesday afternoon.
Balluana police station SHO Ravinder Sharma visited the spot after receiving information and examined CCTV footage from the house. The footage showed Harwinder sitting on a sofa with relatives, with a loaded revolver tucked into his waist. As he stood up, the firearm discharged accidentally, and the bullet struck him in the stomach.
Gravely injured, Harwinder was rushed to a government hospital and later referred to Bathinda, but he died en route.
Leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party, including local MLA Goldy Musafir, along with villagers, reached the government hospital and expressed condolences. The deceased’s father, Darshan Singh, had recently won the panchayat samiti election.
Police conducted a post-mortem on Tuesday and handed over the body to the family for cremation.
