NEW DELHI: November is likely to bring pleasant weather to most parts of India, with nights expected to be warmer than usual across much of the country—except in some areas of northwest India. Daytime temperatures are predicted to stay “normal to below normal,” contributing to a generally comfortable month, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s monthly forecast released on Friday.
The IMD noted that October was cooler than usual in many regions due to factors such as two cyclones, the timely arrival of the northeast monsoon over the southern peninsula, and four Western Disturbances affecting northern India.
In terms of rainfall, October saw the second-highest precipitation since 2001 and the 16th highest since 1901, with the country receiving more than 112 mm of rain—about 49% above the normal average.
The department also highlighted that 2025 marks only the 12th year since 1891 with no cyclone formation between January and September. The previous instances occurred in 1938, 1949, 1980, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1993, 1995, 2011, and 2012.
Releasing the November forecast, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said, “Rainfall in November is expected to be normal in the southern peninsular region, while most parts of the country will experience normal to above-normal rainfall, except in some areas of northwest India.”
On temperature trends, he explained, “Most parts of the country are likely to see normal to below-normal daytime temperatures. However, regions in northeast India, parts of northwest and southern peninsular India, and the Himalayan foothills may experience above-normal maximum temperatures.”
As for nighttime temperatures, Mohapatra added, “Minimum temperatures are expected to be above normal across most of the country, except in parts of northwest India, where they are likely to be normal to below normal.”
La Niña conditions, which are typically associated with colder winters in northern India, are currently weak but are expected to persist through the December to February period. The IMD will release a detailed winter outlook on November 30.
