On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia would not be concerned if the United States chooses not to renew the New START treaty, which places limits on nuclear warheads and is set to expire next year. The New START treaty, which was signed in 2010 by the United States and Russia, restricts each nation to 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear warheads and 700 delivery systems, which include missiles and bombers. Additionally, it facilitates mutual inspections and data exchanges to ensure adherence and maintain transparency in nuclear arms control. Putin expressed that it would be a “shame” if the long-established arms control framework between the two nations were to dissolve, as reported by the news agency Reuters. While addressing reporters at a summit in Tajikistan, Putin remarked that an arms race is already in progress and confirmed that Russia is actively developing and testing new-generation nuclear weapons. “Will these few months suffice to reach a decision on an extension? I believe it will be sufficient if there is goodwill to prolong these agreements. If the Americans conclude that they do not require it, that is not a significant issue for us,” he stated. The Russian leader emphasized that Moscow is prepared to voluntarily adhere to the limits set forth in the New START treaty if Washington consents to do likewise. The START agreement is scheduled to expire in February. The United States has not yet provided a formal response to Russia’s proposal. “We are willing to negotiate if it is acceptable and beneficial for the Americans. If not, then we will not, but that would be unfortunate, as it would leave nothing in terms of deterrence regarding strategic offensive weapons,” Putin remarked. Without specifying, Putin also cautioned that other nations may be getting ready to conduct nuclear tests. “Some countries are contemplating this; to my knowledge, they are even making preparations, and that is why I indicated that if they proceed, we will respond in kind,” he added, suggesting that extending the treaty “for at least a year is a prudent idea.
