BHUBANESWAR: Four days after a 15-year-old girl in Odisha’s Puri district alleged she was set on fire by three unidentified motorcycle-borne men, police say they have found no evidence to support her claims so far.
A senior police official stated that despite registering an FIR and initiating an intensive probe, investigators have been unable to verify the presence of any bikers at the scene. CCTV footage from within a 2-kilometre radius, witness statements, and forensic analysis of the area have not revealed any sign of vehicles or suspects linked to the alleged incident.
The teenager, who is reportedly in a traumatised state, has been unable to provide further details. She was airlifted from AIIMS Bhubaneswar to AIIMS Delhi, where she remains in the burn intensive care unit. According to hospital sources, she recently underwent surgery and is currently in critical condition on oxygen support.
Dr. Rima Dada, professor in charge of the media cell at AIIMS Delhi, confirmed the severity of her condition, adding that her recovery may take time.
In the meantime, police say the investigation is ongoing but inconclusive. “We are waiting for the girl’s condition to stabilise so she can help clarify what actually happened,” said an officer. “Right now, there’s no evidence to confirm or disprove the claims.”
One eyewitness who was near the location during the time of the alleged attack told police they did not see any motorcycles or suspicious activity.
Initially, the investigation focused on the girl’s statement and a complaint filed by her mother, which alleged that three men attacked her with a flammable liquid. However, with no leads emerging, the police have broadened their inquiry. They have questioned several individuals, including the girl’s acquaintances, local residents, and known offenders in the area.
Puri Superintendent of Police Pinak Mishra urged caution, saying, “It is important not to speculate or jump to conclusions. The investigation is still at a preliminary stage, and any assertions must be based on solid evidence.”
