NAVI MUMBAI: A 24-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Palm Beach Road near Sanpada in the early hours of Tuesday after an unidentified vehicle rammed into his motorcycle from behind.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the biker was decapitated as the motorcycle skidded nearly 50 metres along the road. A 19-year-old woman riding pillion suffered serious injuries and remains in critical condition.
Police identified the deceased as Prashant Jamdade, who worked for a private firm. The injured pillion rider, Harman Kaur, sustained severe injuries to her head and both legs and has been admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital.
According to police, the two friends were returning home after attending Holika Dahan celebrations when the accident occurred.
Police Sub-Inspector Suraj Raut said the crash took place around 3 am when the duo reached the Sanpada stretch of Palm Beach Road. An unidentified vehicle allegedly rammed into their bike from behind and fled the scene immediately after the collision.
Investigators said they examined CCTV footage along the route in an attempt to identify the vehicle involved. However, police found that there were no cameras installed at the exact location where the accident occurred.
An FIR has been registered at Koparkhairane police station against the unidentified driver under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act. Police have launched a search to trace the vehicle involved in the crash.
