PUNE: A 36-year-old woman from Nagpur has gone missing under mysterious circumstances from a remote village near the Line of Control (LoC) in Kargil district, Ladakh. The incident occurred on May 14, and she has not been seen since.
According to Kargil additional superintendent of police Nitin Yadav, the woman had checked into a local hotel in Kargil on May 9 along with her 15-year-old son. On May 14, she left her son at the hotel and set out alone for Hunderban village—reportedly the last inhabited settlement near the LoC. She did not return.
Hotel staff raised the alarm after noticing her absence later that night. “When we were informed, our team visited the hotel and spoke to her son,” Yadav told TOI. “He said they had been traveling for a few days, having visited several places in Punjab before arriving in Kargil.”
Police have launched a search operation, but so far, there have been no leads. “It’s concerning that she went missing from a village so close to the LoC. A special team has been formed to locate her,” Yadav said.
Investigators have contacted the woman’s family to gather background information. Her relatives confirmed that she had been divorced for about ten years. She previously worked as a nurse in private hospitals in Mumbai and Nagpur and later took up tailoring, a business now managed by her two sisters.
Officials from the Women and Child Welfare Committee have since arrived in Kargil to take temporary custody of the boy, in accordance with child protection protocols. “He is currently safe and staying with us. Due to the trauma of the situation, we’ve limited our questioning for now. He will be handed over to family members after the necessary legal procedures,” Yadav added.
The search for the missing woman continues.
