NEW DELHI: The BJP is making significant progress in Muzaffarpur, as its candidate Ranjan Kumar has taken an early lead with a margin of 575 votes. Congress candidate Bijendra Chaudhary is in second place, while Dr A.K. Das from Jan Suraaj is in third, trailing by 2,280 votes based on initial trends. The Muzaffarpur Assembly constituency, situated in the political heartland of north Bihar, has consistently been a crucial battleground between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, mirroring the larger political dynamics influencing the state. As a general seat, Muzaffarpur has hosted some of the most fiercely contested electoral battles in recent years, with both parties experiencing alternating victories. In the 2020 Assembly elections, Congress candidate Bijendra Chaudhary narrowly defeated BJP’s Suresh Kumar Sharma by a margin of 6,326 votes, garnering 81,871 votes compared to Sharma’s 75,545. The constituency had a total of 3,22,538 registered voters and saw 1,70,011 valid votes cast. This victory represented a significant shift from 2015, when Sharma successfully retained the seat for the BJP with a margin of 29,739 votes, polling 95,594 votes against JD(U)’s Bijendra Chaudhary, who received 65,855 votes.
Candidates Party Votes polled Vote percentage
Ranjan Kumar BJP 2545
Bijendra Chaudhary RJD 1970

In 2010, Suresh Kumar Sharma achieved a significant victory for the BJP, defeating LJP’s Mohammad Jamal by a margin of 46,439 votes. Sharma garnered 72,301 votes, whereas Jamal received 25,862 out of a total of 1,21,797 valid votes. The alternating outcomes between Sharma and Chaudhary reflect the evolving political dynamics in Muzaffarpur, influenced by local factors and changing alliance strategies in north Bihar. The strength of the BJP in the region was further emphasized during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where Raj Bhushan Choudhary of the BJP secured the Muzaffarpur parliamentary seat with a substantial lead of 2,34,927 votes over Congress candidate Ajay Nishad. Voter engagement in Bihar reached unprecedented levels during the 2025 elections, with an overall turnout of 66.91 percent recorded across both phases. Male voter turnout was 62.8 percent, while female turnout was notably higher at 71.6 percent. As the counting day nears, all attention is focused on Muzaffarpur, where the BJP and Congress are competing fiercely for supremacy in one of Bihar’s most politically charged constituencies.
